Witam

Despite the platitude that anyone who serves as his own lawyer has a fool 
for a client, is there any clear advantage or serious disadvantage for the 
defendant in asserting this legal right?

Fraza "anyone who serves as his own lawyer has a fool for a client"
dokładnie coś takiego znaczy. Kontekst oczywiście zawiera jeszcze 
pytanie.
